If you are experiencing slow system performance when using Google Chrome, there's a good chance it is causing 100% disk usage. The following article discusses 6 possible solutions.
Is Chrome up-to-date?
Ensure you are running the latest version of Google Chrome browser
- Click the 3 vertical dots in the upper right corner
- Select Help
- Select About Google Chrome
- If you see a prompt to update Chrome, click it and follow the directions
- If you don't, you are current!
- As of May 11, 2023 the current version is Version 113.0.5672.93
Use Chrome Task Manager
- Open Chrome as per usual
- Press 'Shift + Esc'
- Review the running items and determine which are using the most memory and CPU
- Select the ones which may be responsible for the high Disk Usage and click 'End Process' to terminate them.
- Before you do this, ensure this will not cause any unintended closure or loss of data
Disable Pre-Fetch
- Open the Chrome Settings page (chrome://settings)
- Click 'Cookies and Other Site Data', located under Privacy and Security
- Locate the 'Preload pages for faster browsing and searching' option and disable
Disable the Autocomplete Feature
- Open the Chrome Settings page (chrome://settings)
- Click 'Sync and Google Services'
- Locate the 'Autocomplete searches and URLs' option and disable it
Delete Corrupted History File
This option is recommended for advanced users only.
- Press 'Ctrl + Shift + ESC' to open Task Manager
- End all running Chrome processes
- Next, press 'Win + R' to open the Run dialog box
- Type '%appdata%' and click OK
- Open 'Google', 'Chrome', 'User Data', and 'Default'
- Search for the 'History' folder and delete it
Reset Google Chrome
- Open the Chrome Reset page (chrome://settings/reset)
- Click 'Restore settings to their original defaults'
- Click 'Reset Settings' to confirm the reset
...and, as a last resort...
Uninstall Google Chrome and reinstall
- Uninstall Google Chrome from the system
- Reboot the system
- Reinstall Google Chrome browser
